“The mice will see you now.” is one among the many many iconic lines that this book is home to. It has humor in every page, sarcasm in every line and bizarre mockery of the earth from a galactical viewpoint. Douglas Adams has redefined post-modern satire and science fiction with his popular “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” series.

The entire series consists of five books, and it's most likely that you will get hooked in with the very first one. In my case, I was impressed with the very foreword! Adams gives us a pinnacle view at human problems, mocking most of them out of seriousness and making us understand their triviality. He uses imitation effectively and gives human qualities to robots, the Galactical president and an entire race of aliens.

This book is unlike any other science fiction. It realigns the whole idea of extraterrestrial beings, drags down human significance to a low bar and removes our sense of control over not only earth, but organisms such as the mice.

By doing so, the author has produced a comical narrative that very quietly and efficiently questions the entire human understanding and our priorities. At certain points it brings in existentialism going on to thicken the plot with philosophy, psychology and other schools of thought.

Douglas Adams’s Galactical World:

Apart from the social satire, hitchhiker’s guide also paints vivid images of outer space, planets and whole new worlds. It follows the storyline of how an earthly man, the protagonist, Arthur Dent and his alien friend, escape the earth seconds before it’s destroyed and become hitchhikers of the galaxy.

In their adventures, the author introduces ‘premium planets’, ‘vogans’, a planet that builds other planets and much more. His descriptions of actions, scientific advancements are simple yet mind blowing. The fact that he manages to convey these themes while still maintaining the humor is praise worthy.

The book is known for its selling millions of copies and staying at the top the longest in the bestseller list. The book has also won several awards and has a huge fan following since its publication in the 70s. Multiple fan clubs and communities have also sprung up, discussing the series, producing merchandise and so on. Finally, if you are looking for a fun read, kindly don’t miss out on this book. Also “Don’t Panic”!
