In recent times, Tollywood’s recent release “3 BHK” has received much acclaim within the Indian subcontinent. The story spreads over almost 2 decades and depicts the plight of the middle class man. It is grounded very much in reality and shows the long-term effects of living pay-check to pay-check and upgrading using EMIs.

At various points in the movie, one wonders what is the point of such an existence? The social system is built to make us chase after money, giving us false indications of growth, but in reality are we really growing? You work for 10 years and save to buy a house, but by the time you are ready, the cost has escalated once again, and then the cycle begins again.
Moreover, this seems to be an international plight especially for individuals belonging to the ‘middle-class’ division. The cost of living and the earnings never seem to match. In addition, we are presented with a life-map that is mostly monotonous and stamps out the ‘life’ out of it. While this sounds really depressing, there is also an alternate culture that is simultaneously developing.
The Subversions to Modern-Life
This particular culture is in contrast to the modern and fast-paced life that the majority fall into. As a subversion, this culture focuses on slow moments, pauses to admire the beauty in the world and brings its people together to read and talk, without phones.
Numerous communities have sprung up particularly in urban cities. These communities rely heavily on different forms of art beginning with writing, reading, painting, to even board games. While the participants are mostly young adults, there seem to be no age limit in such communities built on mutual respect.
Yet another form of culture is also rising, - the young business culture. Individuals, mostly also within the early 20s and 30s age group, have turned to entrepreneurship as their solution to career and money problems. As a result, a huge number of start-ups have erupted and numerous youngsters are seeing success.
What are your thoughts on the mundane modern life? Are there any other subversions that I missed? Let me know in the comments.
